US visa procedures require that the visa application form called DS-160 must first be filled out for applications to be made in short-term categories. It is no different from the visa form used in other country applications. It is filled out to obtain personal information about you, to determine the reason for your travel, to determine your visa category and to send you your list of documents based on this form, and it is considered as a kind of resume.

We recommend that you do not make your travel payments before starting the US visa application steps and even finalizing your transaction file. Since the American Embassy has a very busy work on immigration, it has gathered the American visa procedures under two main headings.

For those who will apply from the visa categories we call short-term, the first requirement is to fill out the DS-160 Visa Application Form published on the legal website. All your documents with which you will start the US visa procedures must be up to date. In cases such as name and surname change, all your documents must be updated and included in the file in their final form. Otherwise, your US visa application will be invalid.

U.S. Visa Application Center

The American Embassy has been assigned as the American Visa Application Center. The institution that carries out the work of your American Visa procedures through the Consulates of Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir is the only competent institution that makes decisions about the American visa.

U.S. Visa Appointment

The US Visa Appointment step will be started after filling out the DS-160 Application form and filing your documents. The American Consulate closest to your address of residence will evaluate your procedures after the appointment and your American Visa procedures will be obtained at the same consulate.

On the appointed appointment date, your visa guide will meet you with your passport, required documents and DS-160 application form confirmation documents, and you will complete the process by conducting the US Visa Application interview. US Visa General Documents

  • DS-160 Visa Application Form: It is mandatory to answer the questions in the DS-160 Visa Application Form.   • Passport: Your passport must be valid after travel, not worn and with a blank page.

Things to Consider in US Visa Procedures

Should Hotel-Flight tickets be purchased before the visa application is finalized?

The first thing that citizens of the Republic of Turkey who want to apply for one of the non-immigrant American visa types need to do is to fill out the DS-160 Application Form electronically. This form, prepared by the American Consulate, is intended to get to know the applicant. The DS-160 Application Form, which must be filled in English, asks questions about your (applicant) and your family's personal information, passport information, purpose of travel, whether you have obtained a US visa before, address information of your accommodation in the USA, information showing your job and education status, and who you will travel with. The applicant must answer these questions in the application form that do not contradict the information in the documents to be submitted to the American Embassy during the visa application. If your answers are contrary to those in the documents, your visa may be rejected.  

How to Fill Out the US DS-160 Form?

The US DS 160 Form is filled out online from the official website of the US Department of State. According to American law, Form DS-160 must be filled in and electronically signed by the applicant himself. But if the applicant is illiterate or too young to fill out the form, they can get help from another person. The first and last name of the person helping should be stated on the 'Sign and Submit' page.

After filling out the form is completed, you should print out the approval of the form by clicking the 'Print' button at the top right. You must take a printout of this form with you to your visa appointment at the Consulate or Embassy. Be careful not to fold or wrinkle the form. As soon as you enter your information on the US DS-160 form and approve it electronically, all your information is transferred to the US Embassy and Consulate General. Visa officials will evaluate according to the information written here and decide whether to approve your visa.

Be Careful When Filling Out the US DS-160 Form!

  • Prepare your photo: First of all, you need to have a 5x5 cm photo that you will attach to the form after filling out the DS-160 form. Before you start applying, go to a photographer and have a biometric photo taken and get both printed and digital versions. Then scan this photo and save it in jpg format on your computer's desktop. You will need to add your photo to your form.

  • Before you start filling out the form, have your passport, old US visas if applicable, and any other information about your intended trip to the US ready. Because you will need this information when filling out your application form.

  • Fill out the form in English characters: Another thing you will pay attention to is the use of capital letters. Turkish characters such as İ and Ğ should never be used when filling out the DS-160 Form. If you use it, the form will give an error before you can go to the next page.

  • Select the city where you will apply: When you go to the US Department of State website to fill out the US DS-160 form, you must first choose which province you will apply from. To do this, you can select the city where you will enter the visa interview from the "Select a location, where you will be applying for this visa" section at the top of the page. If you will apply from the American Consulate General in Istanbul (TURKEY-ISTANBUL), you can select the option you will apply from the American Embassy in Ankara (TURKEY-ANKARA). Then you must enter the 'Verification Code' under this option in the relevant field.

  • Test your photo: After determining the city you will apply to in the form, log in to the 'TEST PHOTO' section at the bottom of the page and check whether the size and color of your photo you will upload at the end of the form are suitable. If you fail to upload your photo, do not forget to take 2 5x5 photos with a white background with you when you go to the appointment at the American Consulate General or Embassy. After testing the suitability of your photo, you can start filling out the form by clicking the 'Start An Application' button at the bottom of the page.

  • Make a note of your application number: When you start filling out Form DS-160, there may be a technical malfunction in the system or you may want to continue filling out the form at another time. In such cases, you can save as much as you filled in and then continue your transaction from where you left off. For this, you will need the 'Application Number' and the answer to the Security Question.  When you select the security question from the list, write the answer in the relevant box and press the 'Continue' button, you will see the 'ID Number' in the upper right corner of the page that opens. Don't forget to write down this number and your answer to the security question. Because if you need to turn off your computer without saving your application in the system, you will need these two pieces of information to access your application form.

 

Don't forget to record each stage: As you answer the questions on the application form, save each page by pressing the 'Save' button at the end. Saving allows you to make changes to Form DS-160 within 30 days. If you pressed the registration button before there was a power outage while filling out the form, you can continue the form from where you left off.

If you take a break from filling out the DS-160 Application Form for more than 20 minutes; Your session will be terminated. If you have not saved your application number or application file on your computer, you will have to start over.

To save your form permanently to your computer, you must click the 'Save Application to File' button. Then, when you press the 'Save' button, you will save the application form to your desktop. You can access the questions on the next page by clicking the 'Next' button at the end of each page you finish.

Completing each stage of the application form: The USA DS-160 Application Form consists of 10 stages. The first page contains questions about your personal information. You will have to answer questions about your first name, last name, maiden name, date of birth, gender, marital status in this section. If there is an 'Optional' option next to the questions, you can leave these questions blank. For questions that do not suit your personal situation, you can select the 'Does Not Apply' option.  If you do not answer a mandatory question while filling out the DS-160 form, the system will not allow you to finalize your application.

Applicants who have worked in the United States have a social security or taxpayer number.  If you do not have these numbers, you should check the "Does not apply" option. If the applicant does not have a personal acquaintance in the United States and is going to visit a business organization or organization, that business organization must indicate the name of the organization.

Choose the right passport type: On the third page of the DS-160 form, there are questions about Passport information. In the first question, the type of passport you have used is asked. You must mark whichever of the Green, Burgundy or Gray passports you have. If you are a Bordeaux passport holder, you must write your passport number starting with U without spaces between them. Then you must fill in the information about the issuing authority of the passport, the date of issue and the expiration date.

Choose your visa type: On the fourth page of the US D160 application form; There are questions about the type of visa. After choosing the visa type that specifies your travel purpose, such as touristic travel or commercial travel, questions about your travel dates and the people you will travel to, if any, should be answered.

You will need information about your old visas: On the sixth page of the DS-160 Form, there are questions about whether you have already obtained a US visa. If you have old US visas, you will be asked to write down the reference numbers. Even if you have applied for a US visa before, you should also answer the questions about when you made it and whether it was rejected.

Write the accommodation addresses correctly: On the seventh page of the form, questions are asked about the contact information of the place where you will stay in the USA. If the place you will stay is a relative's house; You must fill in the name and surname information of the person you will be staying with. If you are going to stay at the hotel; You must fill in the hotel name, full address, state and phone number.

Enter your family information correctly: On the eighth page of the DS-160 application form, you will see questions about family information. Here, you will be asked to write the name, surname and birth dates of your father and then your mother as day, month and year. If you answer 'Married' to the question about your Marital Status on the first page of the form, you will be asked to fill in all the information of your spouse in this section.

Profession and military service information is asked for men: In the ninth section of the US visa application form, there is an Occupational group option for male applicants. Under this option, there are questions about workplace and school details. After these questions, answers are asked to questions about the foreign languages they speak, the countries they have traveled to in the last 5 years, and finally their military service for male applicants. Applicants who have done their military service must fill in their military service information by selecting the yes section. There are security questions in the last part of the form: The tenth page of the DS-160 form consists of security questions consisting of 5 stages. By answering yes or no to the security questions, they complete their DS-160 form.

 

Upload your photo: After you have finished answering the questions on the DS-160 Form, it is time to upload a digital photo of yourself in accordance with the standards set by the American Consulate. You can upload the biometric photo that you have previously scanned and uploaded to your computer's desktop by clicking the "Upload" button. Make sure that the photo was taken within the last 6 months. Using old and non-qualifying photos will prolong the visa application period. Submit your electronic signature: After you answer all the questions, the system will ask you to check your answers. Each page will appear one by one. We recommend that you carefully check your answers to avoid making mistakes at this stage. After checking your information, you must electronically sign your DS-160 Application form by clicking the "Sign Application" button. False information provided in the application form falls within the scope of the penalty of false statement. Therefore, you must make sure that the answers you give are correct.

When you are ready to complete your application, click on the 'Upload an Application' button. After registering your application, you will see a confirmation number with a barcode on the screen. After sending the form to your e-mail and printing it out in color, you can now make your visa appointment.

  • It is very important that the information you declare in the US DS-160 Application Form is correct. This information must coincide with the documents you will submit to the Consulate or Embassy and the answers you will give in the interview. False and untrue statements in the application form may result in permanent denial of entry to the United States. For this, we recommend that you get consultancy before filling out the DS-160 form.

  • All answers on Form DS-160 must be completed in English, with one exception. You just have to write your full name in your own alphabet. Applications submitted in any language other than English will be rejected, and you will need to submit a new application. You should also use English characters in your answers. So you cannot use letters such as ğ, ö, ü or ç. For example, you should write 'Çanakkale' instead of 'Çanakkale' and 'Unye' instead of 'Ünye'.

  • If you are applying for a student exchange program or temporary work visa, you will need to fill out other additional online forms.

  • It is also very important to choose the type of visa that suits your travel purpose and pay the correct visa fee. If you select the wrong visa type on your DS-160 application form, the U.S. Consulate or Embassy will not evaluate your application and send it back. You will be asked to correct your DS-160 form and make a new appointment at the Consulate.

  • If you have already filled out a DS-160 Application Form, you can fill out a new form using this information. For this, you will need the Application Number given to you in the application form you filled out earlier. Click on the 'Retrieve An Application' button to access the application you have previously saved.

  • If you want to apply for a family or group, you will see the option to create a family or group application on the 'Thank You' page at the end of the section where you enter your own information. When you select this option, some of the information in your application is automatically transferred to a new application form. When you select this option, you can create an application form separately for each family member or each group member.
